American Scientists: Irrigation Water in Northern Kazakhstan Is Safe
The quality of water used for irrigating agricultural crops in the North Kazakhstan Region has proven to be very high. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Arizona and Kozybayev University following a two-year joint research project.
The project results were presented by University of Arizona professors Irina Panyushkina and Charles Gerba at a meeting with the leadership of Kozybayev University.
The study focused on assessing the quality of irrigation water in the North Kazakhstan Region. The scientists examined 138 water samples from 63 sources, including rivers, canals, lakes, ponds, and wells. Both surface and groundwater sources used by large agricultural enterprises and small farms were studied.
The researchers paid particular attention to the microbiological safety of the water. This is critically important for agriculture, as contaminated water can become a source of pathogenic microorganisms and affect the safety of fruits and vegetables.
The results pleasantly surprised the scientists themselves: water quality in the region was found to be very high, with low levels of bacteria.
According to Irina Panyushkina, the way agricultural production is organized in Northern Kazakhstan plays an important role in this. In many cases, water sources and irrigation stations are located away from livestock facilities, settlements, and agricultural fields. This spatial separation reduces the likelihood of microbiological contamination of water.
The scientists noted that this approach could be of interest to other regions and serve as an example of effective irrigation system management.
Kozybayev University Chairman of the Executive Board – Rector Yerbol Issakayev noted that cooperation with the University of Arizona has already developed into a partnership based on trust and continuous interaction. “We have moved from being partners to being good friends,” the Rector said. This approach is in line with the Head of State’s position on the strategic partnership of branches of international universities. Their task is not only to implement academic programs, but also to address technological challenges, exchange expertise, and conduct cutting-edge research that contributes to the development of the regional and national economy.
Agribusiness representative Erlan Zikirin emphasized the importance of cooperation among businesses, universities, and agricultural specialists. It is precisely the combination of the financial resources of businesses, the university’s scientific expertise, and the practical experience of agronomists that makes it possible to develop effective solutions and implement them directly in agricultural production.
