Kassym-Jomart Tokayev: Let's build the New Kazakhstan together

The university community listened to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's address to the nation, "New Kazakhstan: the way of renewal and modernisation". It was attended by the management, staff, professors and students of the university. The new Address of the Head of State is dedicated to the implementation of the program of political reforms and a number of social and economic measures that are to be implemented in the nearest future.

"Today I would like to present a programme of comprehensive modernization of the political system of the country. It is based on the public demand for fundamental changes that has been maturing for many years. Political transformation is aimed at the formation of fair and just 'rules of the game', the uprooting of favouritism and monopolies in all spheres of life," the President said.

At the same time, he presented 10 initiatives that would turn Kazakhstan into a vibrant, productive state with a strong civil society. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev suggested changing the powers of the President, reformatting the representative branch of power, strengthening the role of Parliament, strengthening human rights institutions, improving the competitiveness of the media, improving the administrative-territorial structure of the country, decentralising local self-government, and expanding opportunities for the development of the party system.

"Earlier, the Head of State had already indicated that we are building a new Kazakhstan and that we need a new political culture. This, one might say, will give a new breath to the development of political competition in our country. Emphasis was placed on the unity and harmony of the people of Kazakhstan. In the future, a high culture of dialogue and compromise will be one of the main factors in strengthening civil solidarity.

"We must preserve our main asset - Independence, strengthen the foundations of national identity, and focus on the transformation of the country. This is our sacred duty before future generations," said the Head of State.
