Introduction to science

Science week at the university includes excursions for students from schools in the city. The children get acquainted with various specialised laboratories and learn about the scientific activities of the university.

They have already attended a chemical quiz organised by students and lecturers of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies. Our students and undergraduates put on a real show with various reactions: colour changes in substances, bright flashes and bangs. Simultaneously, presenters explained the special features of various reagents, what they are used for in everyday life, and which compounds from the Mendeleev Table should not be touched with hands. Pupils could also demonstrate their knowledge, actively commenting on chemical experiments, and even taking part in them. This aroused particular interest among the young guests. The most daring and adventurous ones were given souvenirs.

No less excited were the students at the laboratory of archeological research where everyone can touch history with their own hands. The children were told about discoveries and valuable artefacts discovered by our scientists. Clay bowls, first bridles for riding, ancient jewellery of women, household items - all this is carefully stored within the walls of the university. Schoolchildren were interested in the history and purpose of the objects, learned about our historians' expeditions, ancient settlements that have been discovered.

The tour of the Water Science and Technology Centre was also very interesting. Here they grow microalgae called chlorella. Scientists use it to clean water bodies from pollution and the unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulphide. The pupils were able to look through a microscope and see the "green representatives" of the microcosm. They also learned how water is analysed.

Such excursions are an important element in the educational activities not only of school pupils but also of university students.
