Preserving the past, multiplying the future...

As part of the celebration of the 85th anniversary of Kozybayev University, branches of the Ch.Ch. Ualikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology and the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology were opened on the basis of the university.

These research centers will be engaged in the development of fundamental and applied research, taking into account the specifics of the history of Northern Kazakhstan; provide scientific, analytical and consulting services to educational and cultural institutions of the region, and more. In total, 3 branches of the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology have been opened in Kazakhstan: in Astana, Aktau and now in Petropavlovsk.

This will significantly increase the quantity and quality of scientific research in the northern region of the country: a comprehensive study of the features of folklore and historical toponymic material in the border zone of Kazakhstan and Russia;  the history of the northern regions of the country during the Middle Ages and Modern times, especially in terms of the colonial policy of the Russian Empire, the struggle against the invasion of the Dzhungars, national liberation uprisings, political repression, migration processes, etc.

The decision to open a branch was made back in March of this year at the First Republican Congress of History Teachers in Petropavlovsk.

"The branch will work in several directions. On the one hand, this is an attempt to revive the North Kazakhstan Archaeological Expedition, which has been functioning since 1967: conducting large-scale research in the North Kazakhstan Region, organizing up to 6-7 expeditions with the participation of students annually, attracting colleagues from Pavlodar, Kokshetau, Kostanay. On the other hand, we will conduct research and publish scientific papers on a comprehensive interdisciplinary basis, that is, so that the work is carried out not only scientific, but also popularization. We will also place great emphasis on the certification of monuments, since a large number of them are being destroyed. Therefore, one of the tasks is to identify the monuments that we will identify here by districts, certify and transmit information to the center for the protection and use of the historical and cultural heritage of the North Kazakhstan Region. So that each district akimat and rural district knows what objects are on their territory and preserves them," said Talgat Mamirov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology in Almaty.

Also on this day, the first Kyzylzhar forum "Northern Kazakhstan in the flow of history" was held in the new educational and laboratory building, which brought together outstanding historians, archaeologists, representatives of higher educational institutions of the country. Special attention was paid to topical issues of preserving the archaeological heritage of the North Kazakhstan Region, the theme of the ancient peoples of the Eurasian space, the use of the fund of the North Kazakhstan State Archive as a source for studying regional history.
