Kyzyl Oba - a new page in world history

Our scientists continue to study the Kyzyl Oba monument. Here last year a unique discovery was made, without exaggeration, on a global scale, which turns our history upside down: in the 15th century, nomads in the territory of the modern North Kazakhstan region had cities. In 2019, the members of the expedition Kozybayev University and Pavlodar Pedagogical University, organized with the support of the Akimat of the North Kazakhstan region, informed the world about this.

For the second year already, archaeologists have been conducting excavations in the lower reaches of the Seleta River near the village of Bereke, Ualikhanovsky District. There are 7 burial mounds here, where a mausoleum and mausoleums, built of burnt bricks, rest under a one and a half meter embankment. There were also found kilns for its production, as well as the remains of chigir vessels without a bottom. They were attached to a lifting wheel, which rotated and scooped up water, which, in turn, spread along the grooves into irrigation ditches, and then entered the fields. The presence of such objects, of course, speaks of professional architects, builders, the ability to organize production, conduct trade. During archaeological exploration of the area and analysis of aerial photography materials, numerous traces of ancient irrigation were revealed. The discovered gold jewelry speaks of the status of people resting in mazars.

Excavations carried out this academic year have confirmed that the Kyzyl Oba monument belongs to the heyday of the Golden Horde. In particular, the found coins have a Hijri date (1337 according to our calendar) in Arabic script. This money was in circulation during the reign of Khan Uzbek. And the mausoleum - a family tomb, could belong to noble nomads from the Genghisid clan, archaeologists say.

All these facts point to the location in this area of nomadic hordes and a previously unknown cultural and political center of nomads who inhabited the northern steppes of the country. It must be said that the mausoleums carried not only funeral functions, but they were also sacred, they were revered among the people. Therefore, the objects have survived to this day not looted and practically not damaged.

The pandemic has made adjustments to the study of the Kyzyl Oba monument. Now all artifacts are being reconstructed, finds are being processed. It should be noted that the project is being carried out within the framework of the Republican program "Rukhani Zhangyru" and cooperation of our scientists with Pavlodar colleagues, as well as specialists from Ukraine.
