From September 1956, the Department of Mathematics was headed by Vaginak Arutyunovich Tsaturyan (1910–1979), a renowned mathematics educator not only in the North Kazakhstan region but also beyond, a candidate of pedagogical sciences, associate professor. He was born into a large peasant family in 1910. After graduating from a pedagogical college in 1931, he worked as a mathematics teacher and was also a school inspector at the District Department of Education.
From August 1934, he became a student at the Moscow State Institute named after V.I. Lenin.
After graduating from the institute, he worked as a senior lecturer in mathematics and head of the department at the Kyzyl-Orda Pedagogical Institute.
A candidate for membership in the VKP(b) since March 1939, he became a full member in March 1940.
On December 7, 1943, he was drafted into the Soviet Army, where he served until January 22, 1947, eventually reaching the rank of senior lieutenant.
From 1947 to 1953, he worked as a senior lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, head of the department, and dean of the faculty at the Kyzyl-Orda Pedagogical Institute. In 1958, he defended his candidate dissertation on "Methods of Teaching Elements of Mathematical Analysis in Secondary School."
From 1953 to 1979, Vaginak Arutyunovich worked as a senior lecturer and head of the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at the Petropavlovsk Pedagogical Institute. From 1959 to 1969, he was the rector of the university.
His modesty, tact, expertise, and pedagogical mastery, combined with his high standards, earned him respect and authority among students, faculty, and those who interacted with him.
For his professional and public service, Tsaturyan V.A. was awarded medals, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and the badges "Excellence in Public Education of the Kazakh SSR" and "Excellence in Education of the USSR."
On February 1, 1979, V.A. Tsaturyan was granted a state pension. However, in March 1979, he passed away. In memory of this remarkable person and educator, a memorial classroom was established at the university. This significant event in the history of the former Pedagogical Institute was reported in the newspapers "Leninskoye Znamya" on October 14, 1982, and "Pravda" on December 6, 1982.
