Research Laboratory “Multimodal Microscopy and Biosensor Technologies”

The Multimodal Microscopy and Biosensor Technologies Research Laboratory was established in 2026 as part of project BR28712227, “Development and Implementation of High-Tech Solutions for Monitoring, Treatment and Rational Use of Water Resources in the North Kazakhstan Region to Ensure Public Health.”

Laboratory objective: To develop and implement advanced methods for analyzing and monitoring the quality of water, biological fluids and the environment based on multisensor approaches, high-resolution microscopy and advanced sample preparation technologies, with a long-term perspective of enabling flow-through analysis of clinical samples.

Main objectives of the laboratory:

  • Development and validation of next-generation biosensor systems, including electrochemical biosensors using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for the selective detection of toxicants (pesticides, heavy metals and bacterial toxins); potentiostatic and impedance sensors for the analysis of water from various sources and biological samples.
  • Sample preparation and concentration: Development of filtering materials and adsorbents (e.g., cryogel-based materials) for the preliminary concentration of low-level contaminants; use of cryostats, freeze-drying and vacuum plasma cleaning for sample preparation prior to microscopy and electrochemical analysis.
  • Microscopic and spectroscopic analysis: Application of fluorescence and confocal microscopy for the analysis of cells, microorganisms, plant and biological tissues; use of a scanning electron microscope for the morphological analysis of filters, soil samples, minerals and bacteria before and after purification and bioremediation processes.
  • Physicochemical and thermodynamic studies of bioprocesses: Measurement of the heat effects of microorganism growth using an isothermal calorimeter to monitor bioremediation processes and control microbiological activity.
  • Water quality analysis and nanoparticle monitoring: Determination of the size, charge and distribution of nanoparticles using the Zetasizer Lab; development of rapid methods for monitoring drinking, wastewater and surface water.
  • Development of calibration and confirmatory analysis methodology: Use of high-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) as a confirmatory method for verifying biosensor data and developing calibration models.
